Why Functional Medicine?

In today’s world—from the foods we eat to the pace of modern life—what is often considered “normal” is not always conducive to long-term health and well-being. Many aspects of modern living can gradually influence our health, often contributing to unwanted symptoms such as bowel issues, memory trouble, chronic pain, lack of energy, mood disturbances, persistent rashes, chronic headaches, weight gain, irregular periods, and more.

One exciting development in recent decades is the growing the field of epigenetics. While we once viewed our genes as largely determining our health, research increasingly suggests that the relationship between our genes and our environment is far more dynamic than previously understood. Nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress, and environmental exposures are among the factors that may influence how our genes are expressed.

Functional Medicine invites us to consider whether our chronic symptoms are something we must just learn to live with. As we learn to listen more closely to our bodies, we may discover that there is more to healing than simply feeling better- it may also deepen our understanding of ourselves and reveal new possibilities for living.

Why a Whole-Person Approach?

Research has increasingly demonstrated that the body’s systems are deeply interconnected. Rather than functioning in isolation, our gastrointestinal, immune, nervous, endocrine, metabolic and other systems are constantly communicating with one another and responding to our environment.

Sometimes referred to as systems biology approach, Functional Medicine recognizes that chronic health concerns rarely arise from a single isolated factor. Our health reflects a complex and dynamic interplay between our genetics, environment, lifestyle, and life experiences. Because these factors influence one another, changes in one area may affect many others.

Rather than viewing symptoms as problems to simply suppress or fix, we can view them as valuable clues that can help us better understand what is happening within the body. By looking at the bigger picture, we can begin to identify opportunities to better support health.

What to Expect

Before Your First Session

Before we meet, you’ll complete a comprehensive intake form that allows me to become familiar with your health history, current concerns, lifestyle, and goals. This helps me come prepared with possible directions to begin exploring during our first session.

Your Initial Consultation

Our first session is an opportunity to understand the bigger picture of your health. We’ll discuss your current and past symptoms, medical history, nutrition, sleep, stress, daily routines, work schedule, and other aspects of your life that may be influencing your well-being. Most importantly, we’ll talk about what you hope to achieve through our work together.

Based on everything we discuss, I’ll offer possible areas of focus along with practical suggestions within the context of a broader personalized plan. Together, we’ll decide which approach feels most appropriate for you. I believe the most effective plan is one that resonates with you, so your thoughts, preferences, and feedback are always welcome.

Moving Forward

After your first session, you’ll begin to implement the practical suggestions we’ve chosen, along with any follow-up steps we’ve discussed (such as food and lifestyle journals, obtaining previous lab records or completing new laboratory testing where appropriate). Rather than trying to change everything at once, we focus on small, sustainable steps that build on each other over time. The goal is to identify meaningful areas where shifts may support your health and to help you understand the reason behind them so that you can make informed decisions.

Follow-up sessions provide an opportunity to review your progress, discuss any challenges or questions that arise, continue learning about your health, and refine your plan as needed. As your health evolves, our recommendations will likely evolve as well.

I have found that meeting about every two weeks is a manageable and productive pace that allows for implementing changes while providing support and further recommendations. Some individuals reach their goals within a handful of sessions, while most others benefit from working together for several months or longer. The length of our work together is individualized and ultimately up to you.
